Apple has issued a stern caution to iPhone users by outlining the potential dangers of charging the device in bed overnight while they are asleep.

The tech giant says that this practice could turn deadly if the phone plugged into the charger is unable to ventilate (i.e., covered by a pillow or blanket), as it may result in dangerous overheating resulting in fires, electric shock, or damage to iPhone or other property.

It further added that iPhone and Apple USB power adapters (sold separately) obey with required surface temperature limits defined by applicable country regulations and international and regional safety standards.

However, even within these limits, sustained contact with warm surfaces for long periods of time may cause discomfort or injury.

“Use common sense to avoid situations where your skin is in contact with a device, its power adapter, or a wireless charger when it’s operating or connected to a power source for long periods of time,” reads the official safety memo from Apple on its website.

“Don’t sleep on a device, power adapter, or wireless charger, or place them under a blanket, pillow, or your body, when it’s connected to a power source. Keep your iPhone, the power adapter, and any wireless charger in a well-ventilated area when in use or charging. Take special care if you have a physical condition that affects your ability to detect heat against the body.”

To reduce the possibility of heat-related injury or damage, operate an Apple USB power adapter safely and plug it directly into a power outlet.

The tech giant advises against using the power adapter in wet locations, such as near a sink, bathtub, or shower stall. Also, do not connect or disconnect the power adapter with wet hands.

Apple strongly recommends using the original charging cable and an Apple USB power adapter instead of using cheap third-party chargers that do not meet applicable safety standards and may pose a risk of death or injury.

To combat this, the company recommends opting for “Made for iPhone” cables or considering other third-party cables and power adapters that are compliant with USB 2.0 or later that comply with applicable country regulations and international and regional safety standards.

Besides avoiding charging while sleeping, Apple also insisted that one should discard chargers as soon as they become damaged or stop working.

It also added that users should never charge the device near water or any other liquid, adding that “Using damaged cables or chargers, or charging when moisture is present, can cause fire, electric shock, injury, or damage to iPhone or other property.”

By following the above guidelines suggested by Apple, you can ensure a safer charging experience, as well as protect yourself, your phone, and your surroundings from probable dangers.
